Co-founded by Shanghai University (SHU) and University of Technology Sydney (UTS) in 1994, SILC Business School, Shanghai University was one of the earliest Sino-foreign joint business schools in China.

About SILC

Recommended by Shanghai Municipal Education Commission as the first experimental unit for accreditation of Sino-foreign joint education, SILC:

  • was the first Sino-foreign education institute to be accredited by the National Education Assessment Agency in 2006;
  • was named one of the top ten best Sino-foreign joint education institutes by China Education and Research Network in 2009;
  • has been named one of the top ten most influential Sino-foreign joint education institutes by Sina and Xinhuanet for five consecutive years since 2010;
  • became a member of the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) in 2013.The Eligibility Application was accepted by AACSB in 2014, with Business School accreditation gained in 2020;
  • received public commendation from Shanghai Municipal Education Commission for Sino-foreign joint education institutes (programs) in 2016.

We offer a range of options to students from the Shanghai campus that feature leading academics from SILC, the broader UTS Business School faculty, and from around the world.

Bachelor of Business (C10226)

The Bachelor of Business provides a basic understanding of important aspects of business with a choice of majors. Students develop a sound background in all areas of business through common core subjects and in-depth knowledge in one or more chosen areas of interest.

Course aims

The Bachelor of Business provides students with the knowledge, competencies and values necessary to develop critical, analytical and evaluative skills essential for a fulfilling and effective career in business.

Admission requirements

Applicants must have successfully:

  • an Australian Year 12 qualification, Australian Qualifications Framework Diploma, or equivalent Australian or overseas qualification at the required level; or
  • the UTS College Diploma of Business, with no more than two subject failures in the course. Further information about admission requirements, including English language requirements, for the UTS College Diploma of Business, is available on the UTS College website.

The English proficiency requirement for international students or local applicants with international qualifications is:

  • Academic IELTS: 6.5 overall with a writing score of 6.0; or
  • TOEFL:
    • paper-based: 550-583 overall with TWE of 4.5
    • internet-based: 79-93 overall with a writing score of 21; or
  • AE5: Pass; or PTE: 58-64; or
  • CAE: 176-184.

Master of Finance (C04426)

The Master of Finance provides a comprehensive range of skills and expertise expected of leading practitioners in the banking and finance sectors. The finance program provides participants with the opportunity to acquire knowledge of finance theory and techniques for leading-edge professional practice purposes.

The Master of Finance is recognised by the China Ministry of Education; therefore there is no need for further public examination and assessment when applying for jobs in China. The course offers face-to-face intensive teaching by leading academics from UTS and access to the same high-quality teaching resources as Sydney-based UTS students. The practical course design allows students to study and work at the same time, matching the knowledge and skills learned to the opportunities and channels for work promotion and advancement.

Course aims

The Master of Finance provides students with the knowledge and tools that enable them to analyse financial data within both business and industry contexts in order to inform their financial decision-making.

Students develop:

  • an understanding of the operations of a financial system and its major components;
  • the ability to use accounting information to plan and control business operations as well as for decision support;
  • the capacity to identify and understand the economic dimensions of business and community problems;
  • the basic analytical skills required to make informed financial decisions together with an understanding of the issues involved when forecasting in an uncertain world; and
  • an up-to-date understanding of the finance functions within large organisations under different tax regimes.

Admission requirements

Applicants must have completed a UTS recognised bachelor's degree, or an equivalent or higher qualification, or submitted other evidence of general and professional qualifications that demonstrates potential to pursue graduate studies.

The English proficiency requirement for international students or local applicants with international qualifications is:

  • Academic IELTS: 6.5 overall with a writing score of 6.0; or
  • TOEFL:
    • paper based: 550-583 overall with TWE of 4.5
    • internet based: 79-93 overall with a writing score of 21; or

Master of Engineering Management (C04283)

The Master of Engineering Management (MEM) offers engineers, technical specialists and non-technical professionals the opportunity to build and stretch their managerial skills, and integrate their business and technical knowledge.

The MEM has been designed specifically to emphasise the interface between engineering, technology and management. The integration of carefully tailored coursework and an independent project produces graduates who understand the professional, societal and environmental context, and have developed a range of management and engineering capabilities to respond to it.

Admission requirements

Applicants must have completed a UTS recognised bachelor's degree, or an equivalent or higher qualification, or submitted other evidence of general and professional qualifications that demonstrate the potential to pursue graduate studies.

It is a requirement that the bachelor's degree was completed with a minimum weighted average mark of 60 and no more than 25 per cent of subjects failed.

The language of instruction for this course is Chinese.

Eligibility for admission does not guarantee offer of a place.

Scholarships for SILC students

UTS endeavours to reward achievement and recognise motivation to succeed. The university is also committed to supporting students experiencing financial hardship and/or other educational disadvantages.

UTS is proud to award scholarships to its students every year and offers four categories of scholarships specifically for SILC students:

  1. Bachelor Degree Transfer Scholarship – For Shanghai University Dual Bachelor Degree students and SILC Pathway Program graduates to study one or two sessions in Year Two of the Bachelor of Business (C10226) at UTS Sydney campus.
  2. SHU Dual Master Degree Scholarship – For the Master of Accounting and Master of Finance pathway cohort at SILC admitted into the Master of Finance or Master of Professional Accounting at UTS Sydney campus.
  3. Bachelor to Master Degree Scholarship – For UTS and Shanghai University Dual Bachelor degree and UTS Bachelor graduates at SILC admitted into a Master degree by coursework program at UTS Sydney campus.
  4. Bachelor of Business Full Award Scholarship – For Shanghai University Dual Bachelor Degree students and SILC Pathway Program graduates admitted into the Bachelor of Business (C10026) in UTS Sydney campus.
