Website privacy notice

1. Purpose

This privacy notice lets visitors to our website know what information is collected about them, how the information is used and whether or not it is disclosed. In this notice, the University of Technology Sydney will be referred to as we, us, our or UTS.

This privacy notices does not cover non-UTS websites.

2. Collecting your information

We do not collect or solicit any personal information via the UTS website that might be unlawful, unnecessary, excessive or unrelated to the functions or activities of the university.

a) Information collected when you visit our website

When you visit the UTS website, a record is generated about your visit which will be used for statistical purposes. Information collected includes:

  • your server address
  • your top-level domain name (for example, .com, .gov, .au, .uk, etc.)
  • the date and time of your visit
  • the pages you accessed and documents downloaded
  • the previous site you visited, and
  • the type of browser you used.

Information may also be collected through cookies. See the cookies section below.

b) Direct collection via forms, online requests or portals

Your information may be collected from you when you enter it directly onto a form or online request, or when you log into a UTS portal. For example, if you use an online electronic form that allow you to request a particular service from the university. Specific systems and forms have their own privacy notice. 

c) Marketing and requesting information on our Courses

Where you subscribe to marketing or request course information via our website or by email, refer also to our marketing privacy notice. 

d) Cookies

UTS may also collect personal information from you through the use of a cookie or other automated means (such as server logs or proxy logs). A cookie is a packet of data that a website stores on your computer or device to identify you as a visitor to that website. You can choose to disallow cookies by changing settings on your web browser.

Examples of the type of information that we may collect through cookies include:

  • your computer’s IP (Internet Protocol) address
  • the date, time and duration of each interaction on our website(s),
  • the pages you visited or campaign sites interacted with, or the online tools you use and the documents you download, and
  • the previous site visited and the type of browser used.

In addition to section 3 of this notice, information we collect through cookies is used to personalise content on our websites for you. We use remarketing cookies, such as through Google and Facebook, and Google Analytics to show advertisements when you visit other websites based on your prior visits our websites. For Google Analytics, you can opt-out by going to Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.

3. How we use and disclose your information

a) How information is used

We use the personal information we collect as a result of your visit to the UTS website to:

  • deliver the basic functionality of our websites
  • monitor and improve website performance
  • monitor the effectiveness of your visit and the university’s web presence, including statistical analysis.

Information provided on online request form or emailed inquiry, will only be used for the purposes it was collected for as defined above or in any separate privacy notice provided to you at the point of collection. 

We may also use or information if relevant to an investigation into alleged breaches of UTS rules, policies or where required or permitted by law.

b) When personal information may be disclosed

Personal information collected as a result of your visit to the UTS website may be shared with contracted service providers. Otherwise, information will only be disclosed where required or permitted by law.

c) Publishing personal information on the UTS website

UTS will only publish personal information on the UTS website if it has been collected for this purpose with your knowledge or if you have consented to the disclosure. When giving such consent you should be aware that information published on the UTS website is accessible to millions of users world-wide, that it will be indexed by search engines, captured in web archive programs, and that it may be copied and used by any web user. This means that once information is published on the UTS website, UTS has no control over its subsequent use and disclosure.

4. How your information is stored and retained

Information collected via the UTS website will be stored securely in UTS controlled and managed systems, including those hosted by service providers on our behalf under contract.

Information is retained for the purposes for which it was collected, and in line with legal retention obligations under the State Records Act 1998 (NSW).

5. Your rights in relation to your information

You have a right to request access to personal information or amendment of inaccurate information, that we hold about you. Further information can be found below under contact us.
